USEFUL DESIGN DEFINITIONS FOR THE NON

Mm

margin

Page layout

The space between the page and the “live area” (the text and graphics).

If there is no margin on an image, and it bleeds at the edge of the page (runs past the edge of the page and is trimmed), the text margin may still be described as that area between the edge of the page and the beginning of the text.

For an effective visual layout on a page of text, the margin should not be smaller than the gutter (space between the columns of text) or the columns of text will not appear to have the necessary coherence as elements on a page.
