This is a closeup of the three colored LEDs (light emitting diodes) that combine to create a single pixel. A typical computer screen resolution is 1024 pixels across by 768 high. An array of pixels illuminated at differing colors and intensities create the images we see on screen.
A Single Pixel

When a web designer tells you a photo should be 72 ppi for web use, he means that there must be 72 pixels in each linear inch of computer screen. A typical screen resolution is 1024 pixels wide by 768 high

PNG

Portable Network Graphic. PNGs are useful for creating Microsoft WORD templates. It is the specified format for inserting graphics into the header and footer areas of a Word stationery template, for instance.

Pixels per inch. See DPI.
