USEFUL DESIGN DEFINITIONS FOR THE NON

Ss

signatures

Printing and binding

Two or more sheets of paper stacked and folded as a group. Signatures are typically sewn together to form a book.

site map

Web design / architecture

An important first step to the process of website design that outlines the hierarchal structure of pages and content on a website.

The site map is often included in the footer links of a complex website for the user’s reference, to see the underlying structure and therefore more easily navigate the website.

A site map can help search engine directories to more readily identify and index content on the pages of the website itself.

smyth sewing

Printing and binding

Method of sewing through the fold by machine to join multiple signatures to form textblock.

splash page

In web design, a page that precedes the “home page” as an entry portal, normally for artistic effect, advertising or brand promotion. This page exists outside of the site’s main navigation or menu system, and is accessable only on “entering” the site. Often these include “enter” or “skip intro” text that link to the main homepage.

It is generally not recommended to include a “splash” page, especially for websites that exist to provide information to repeat visitors, as they add an unnecessary step for the user, and similar effects can be achieved using rich media content on the homepage.
