Typography

Typeface is a family of fonts that might include multiple weights and variations (normal or “roman”, italic, bold, small capitals, etc) and sizes.

A font is one size of one complete alphabet, with figures and punctuation marks, within a particular typeface. For example, Garamond Bold, 12pt is a font of the typeface “Garamond”. (Traditionally, in hot-metal composition, the font represents only one size of typeface. With digital typefaces, the font is scalable in size, and so the term is less exact.)

Typefaces are often categorized for easier management & recognition. Categories may include: serif, sans serif, slab serif, old style, transitional, modern, script, blackletter, calligraphy, casual, and latin.

typography

Arrangement and specification of type in preparation for electronic presentation or printing. Traditionally associated with printing from individual metal type (letterpress), the term now applies to any type-composition system.
